Retiree Stories

Dick and Alice Mockler
Newcomers 1990, Mission, British Columbia

The Mocklers are a very happy couple who have been living in Campbell River for 13 years. They came here from Mission B.C. Their reason was economical. After searching the island they found that the living costs in Campbell River were low enough for them to afford both the house and the sailboat they wanted. They found the further south they looked, the more expensive the houses became. However, they have "since become enamored" with the community because of the beauty and cleanliness, the services offered, and the excellent healthcare facilities.

When asked what makes her want to stay in Campbell River, Alice Mockler answered, "Oh heavens look out the window!" gesturing towards their half acre yard of beautiful west coast wilderness. "It's so peaceful, I can sit out there for hours with the birds." She also finds the Campbell River air to be "just Heaven," and mentions how in other cities there is often a visible haze and unpleasant smell. Outside of their home they enjoy the sea walk; "It's a great thing," and Salmon Point.

The Mocklers have found everything they need in Campbell River, from furniture and appliances, to great restaurants. Alice has furnished their home and retiled their floor without having to buy outside of town. She mentions that Nanaimo is just an hour and a half away in case you can't find something here, although she has never gone there to shop. The Mockler's often go out for lunch and enjoy the various restaurants and scenic resorts in which to eat.

A very important service in the Mocklers lives is the Hospital. They are "extremely happy with the medical system." "Any problem we've had has been dealt with immediately." "Due to our age, it's important to us to have good medical attention," says Dick Mockler. They have found that any problem they have is dealt with quickly and is soon over, something they both really appreciate.

It was the cost of living and the great sailing location that brought them here but, now that they have sold their boat, it is the peace, beauty and the ability to enjoy it without having to go far for amenities, that keeps them. "We just really like it here," said Alice Mockler.
